Ryan: On-Time State Budget Will Be a Win for Western New York

March 27, 2012
Following the release of details on the state budget, Assemblyman Sean Ryan released the following statement:

“Once again Albany will deliver an on-time state budget, something all New Yorkers can be proud of,” said Assemblyman Ryan. “The budget agreement contains a number of important items for Western New York. The budget puts in place an additional $150 in aid per full-time student for Community Colleges, for a total increase in aid of over $22 million. This is a huge win for ECC and all of the other Community Colleges across the state who have seen either funding cuts or stagnant funding for the past 5 years. The budget also contains a 4% increase in public education funding, and no cuts to public education of any kind, which is vitally important as we strive to improve our schools. I was proud to fight for these important provisions for Western New York. Additional foreclosure assistance funding for the Attorney General’s office and accelerated infrastructure funding for roads and bridges are two cornerstone pieces of this budget agreement that are absolutely essential. More locally, the budget will preserve funding for Roswell Park Cancer Institute, the Domestic Violence Clinic at UB, and the Tobacco Cessation Program. These are all critical elements of the budget that protect important services in Western New York. In addition, the budget restores $30.6 million in Elderly Pharmaceutical Insurance Coverage (EPIC) funding to protect our seniors from potentially devastating cuts. All of this, on top of the fact that taxes will not go up, signals a historic budget agreement that is a win for all of Western New York.”
