Assemblyman Steve McLaughlin (R,C-Melrose) recently honored Cliff Perez of Troy who received the 2012 Dr. Henry Viscardi, Jr. Advocacy Award as part of Disabilities Awareness Day at the Capitol. Perez, who was born with vision impairment and is legally blind, has spent more than 26 years working in the field of advocacy to enhance and defend the rights of people with disabilities. He currently serves as a Systems Advocate at the Independent Living Center of the Hudson Valley, an independent living center located in Troy, which seeks to help persons with disabilities gain and develop independence.
“Our disabled community needs people like Cliff Perez, who possess a firsthand understanding of the challenges facing people with impairments, who uses his own experiences to drive his advocacy work,” said McLaughlin. “For nearly three decades, Mr. Perez has been a passionate leader when it comes to supporting disabled New Yorkers, not only in providing the services they rely on, but also helping them become self-reliant. As we celebrate Disabilities Awareness Day, I can think of no better time to honor Mr. Perez’s efforts and point to him as a shining example of the commitment and hard work it takes to truly support disabled New Yorkers.”
