Assemblyman Jordan, Colleagues Meet With State’s Leading Corrections Associations; Gather Feedback on Improving Facility Safety, Working Conditions and Effectiveness
June 3, 2009

Assemblyman Tony Jordan (R,C-Jackson) and colleagues from the Assembly Minority Conference met yesterday with representatives from the state’s leading correction officers associations to gather input on how to improve working conditions, safety and operations within New York’s correctional facilities. Representatives from the New York State Correction Officers, Police Benevolent Association, and the Public Employees Federation attended the Assembly Minority Statewide Forum on Workforce Issues in the Correctional System.

The issues surrounding correctional facilities have taken on increased importance within the 112th Assembly District in recent months after it was announced that Camp McGregor would be forced to close its doors within one month.

“The Camp McGregor minimum-security prison is slated for closure in less than a month,” said Jordan. “This move will close the door on a valuable tool for rehabilitating inmates. Minimum-security facilities combat recidivism by providing programs designed to assist inmates in preparing to live in the general population. In today’s economic downturn, we must spend every tax dollar wisely. We are gathering feedback today from those who work in our prisons on how to efficiently rehabilitate every inmate while keeping our facilities secure.”
