Saratoga Heritage Under Attack
A statement from Assemblyman Tony Jordan (R,C,I-Jackson)
February 8, 2012
Governor Cuomo’s misguided plan to charge horse owners to race in NYRA-approved events is yet another blow to an Empire State industry struggling to regain its position after the longest recession since the Great Depression. His proposed fee comes just a year after forcing through a new tax on all purses won in our state. Thoroughbred racing is more than just another job creator: it’s a Saratoga tradition. Rather than taxing this vital part of our community, we should be exploring more ways to encourage trainers to bring their business here. If Governor Cuomo’s new fee is passed in the state budget, Saratoga’s racing heritage, and the many jobs it supports, will not be leaving New York – it will be galloping away.
