Jordan: Women’s Equality Too Important To Play Political Games
June 20, 2013
Assemblyman Tony Jordan (R,C,I-Jackson) is calling on Speaker Sheldon Silver to stop playing games with women’s equality and bring the widely agreed upon nine-point plan to the floor for a vote. Gov. Cuomo outlined a 10-point women’s agenda, nine of which directly address serious matters of workplace equality, domestic violence, and other gender-based discrimination issues. The final point, however, radically expands late-term abortion, which many New York legislators do not support. The Senate has opted to break the agenda into separate bills, but Speaker Silver refuses to do the same.
“There is little time left in the legislative session, and this political game is shameful. Because of this refusal to let these important issues come for a vote separately, critically important measures that would protect women from discrimination and violence won’t become law,” said Jordan. “As the father of three daughters, these matters are especially important to me, as they are for every New Yorker. Let’s pass the nine-point women’s equality plan now.”
