Independent Redistricting
January 14, 2013
State legislative and congressional districts are redrawn every 10 years using updated census data. To reform the redistricting process and make it independent and transparent, the Assembly passed a constitutional amendment last year. Today, the Assembly is taking up second passage of that amendment (A.2086).
Adoption of this constitutional amendment would ensure that the drawing of legislative district lines in New York be done by a bipartisan, independent body – a redistricting commission. The commission would draw the lines for congressional and state district boundaries every 10 years, beginning in 2020. And it would guarantee minority voting rights and communities of interest are protected
By adopting a constitutional amendment, voters have a say as well and can vote on it when it goes on the ballot in November 2014. New York has the chance to lead the nation once again with this constitutional amendment, setting the standard for independent redistricting across the nation.
