Thiele Announces Highway Safety Grant Awards for 2nd Assembly District
Assemblyman Fred W. Thiele, Jr. (I-Sag Harbor) today announced highway safety grants that have
been awarded in his Assembly district. These grants were distributed by the Governor's Traffic Safety
Committee and will promote highway and traffic safety. The grants, which are federally funded, promote
projects and programs that have been approved by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration
and are aimed at the "four E"s of highway safety: education, enforcement, engineering and
evaluation. The grants announced today relate specifically to the following categories:
-
Buckle-Up New York (BUNY): Programs designed to provide grantees with resources to conduct
primary seat belt enforcement and education;
-
Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP): Used by law enforcement to target individual traffic
safety issues such as speed, aggressive driving and red light running in high crash corridors;
-
Child Passenger Safety (CPS): Provides for child passenger safety education, car seat checks,
the distribution of seats and child seat fitting stations; and
-
Agency Programs (HS): Resources allocated to state, local and not-for-profits programs that cover
additional traffic safety undertakings through education, enforcement, engineering, training or
