A reminder from
Steve Englebright
Don’t miss out on STAR property tax savings
The deadline is March 1st

Assemblyman Steve Englebright’s
STAR program
Improvements mean greater savings for more seniors

Take advantage of the STAR program, which Assemblyman Englebright helped expand and improve. Last year, Englebright helped block the governor’s attempt to freeze STAR benefits – helping to ensure working families and seniors keep more of their hard-earned money. Englebright also helped raise income eligibility levels for enhanced STAR to $63,750, providing more seniors with needed tax relief.

You must apply by March 1, 2004 to take advantage of STAR – unless you signed up for the Income Verification program last year. By entering the Income Verification program, you will not have to reapply every year. The state will automatically and confidentially confirm your eligibility.

For more information, contact Assemblyman Englebright’s office at 751-3094.

The enhanced School Tax Relief (STAR) program can reduce property taxes an average of $1,460, or 33% a year for eligible Suffolk County homeowners, 65 and over, with incomes up to $63,750. Other homeowners – under the basic STAR program – save an average of $930, or 20% a year.

Keeping Suffolk County affordable

Assemblyman Steve Englebright has been working to lower the cost-of-living for Suffolk County residents. He supported legislation that:

  • Helped create a 10 percent tax credit for people who pay for long-term care insurance for elderly or disabled family members
  • Cut the marriage penalty tax – saving married couples $150 million annually
  • Helped create the College Savings Program to allow individuals to contribute to low-cost, tax-free college savings accounts
