Assemblyman Steve Englebright:

As chairman of the Assembly Committee on Aging, Assemblyman Englebright helped to:

  • Double the long-term care tax credit to 20 percent during recent budget negotiations (Ch. 58 of 2004)

  • Ensure that residents of assisted living facilities get the care they need by sponsoring the Assisted Living Reform Act (Ch. 2 of 2004)

  • Establish the senior citizens’ bill of rights, setting down in law that state services and programs for seniors should be shaped by the principles of strengthening independence, affirming dignity, maximizing choice and a recognition that seniors provide tremendous social, cultural, historic and spiritual enrichment and leadership (Ch. 640 of 2004)


STAR improvements mean greater savings for more seniors
The enhanced School Tax Relief (STAR) program can reduce property taxes an average of $1,480, or 30% a year for eligible Suffolk County homeowners. Other homeowners - under the basic STAR program - save an average of $970, or 18% a year.
Take advantage of the tax-saving STAR program, which Assemblyman Englebright worked to expand and improve. Englebright helped raise income eligibility levels for enhanced STAR to $64,650, providing more seniors with needed tax relief.

You must apply by March 1, 2005 to take advantage of STAR - unless you already signed up for the Income Verification program. By entering the Income Verification program, you will not have to reapply every year. The state will automatically and confidentially confirm your eligibility. Even if you aren’t eligible for enhanced STAR, you may be eligible for basic STAR savings.
