Great Neck - Although Assemblywoman Michelle Schimel was in Albany for a special legislative
session, her District Office staff and interns carried on with her tradition of volunteering at Island
Harvest's Summer Food Blitz. For the third year in a row, Assemblywoman Schimel closed her District
Office so her staff could lend a helping hand in distributing truckloads of donated food and household
supplies to Long Island food agencies.
The August 4th event, which marked the hunger relief organization's fourth annual Summer Food Blitz,
provided food to more than 100 local agencies that supply food to Long Islanders in need.
Volunteers gathered to package and load the food supplies into agency vans which were waiting patiently
in a line around parking lot 48 at Hofstra University. This food will then be distributed to food
pantries, soup kitchens, and nutrition programs.
The Summer Food Blitz was conceived to boost the supply of food during July and August when demand for
assistance perennially increases as tens of thousands of Long Island children lose their school lunch
benefits. This year, however, the need is more crucial than ever as families affected by the recession
struggle to make ends meet. To learn more about Island Harvest please visit their website.
