An important component to improving our health care is the expansion of health insurance coverage to the uninsured, especially children. The Assembly is committed to the idea that every child in the state has access to quality, affordable health insurance. That’s why I fought for $25 million to fully fund an expansion of the Child Health Plus insurance program from 250 to 400 percent of the federal poverty level. This will provide all of New York’s children with access to affordable health care at no cost to New York City. Unfortunately, last year the Bush Administration irresponsibly rejected this proposed expansion, and, as a result, there was no federal funding available to implement these important changes. But we decided that the Bush Administration’s shortsightedness wouldn’t stand in the way of the health of our children. Our action ensures that each of New York’s 400,000 uninsured children is able get the health care they need and deserve. The state budget includes new important programs for all, including—
