available to seniors ages 65+ based on years of employment and amount withheld from earnings.

Supplemental Security Income – Monthly cash benefits for
people 65+, blind or disabled who have low income or resources to meet food, clothing and
shelter needs, financed through general tax revenues, not the Social Security Trust Funds.

Senior Citizen Rent Increase Exemptions (SCRIE) – Applications

Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) – Helps low-income
homeowners and renters pay fuel and utility costs. For more information call NYC Department

Minor Home Repair Program – This program provides labor for
minor home repairs for low-income seniors. Information is available by calling Department for the
Aging 1 (212) 442-1000.

Senior Citizen Homeowners Exemptions Program (SCHE) – Seniors
who own property, including cooperative apartments, may be eligible to save up to 50% of their
property taxes. To qualify, the property must be the applicants legal residence, used exclusively for
residential purposes and have no more than three units. For information please call NYC Department

Senior Housing – The “Alternative in Senior Housing” booklet is a
comprehensive listing of existing senior housing built or specifically set aside for seniors in New

Reduced Fare – Reduced Fare Privileges on NYC owned buses
and subways and the Staten Island Ferry – 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Reduced fares are
also available on NYC transit and some private express bus lines during non-rush hours. To obtain

ACCESS-A-RIDE – Provides transportation for people with
disabilities who are unable to use public bus or subway service for some or all of their trips.
