Dear Friend: I am very concerned about an alarming increase in complaints about bed bug infestations. New York City’s 311 hotline received close to 7,000 reports in fiscal year 2007. While not known to carry disease, bed bugs can aggravate certain allergies, as well as bite exposed areas of skin causing itchy welts. What’s more, infestations can spread rapidly. That’s why it’s very important to identify the problem, and take immediate steps to correct it. With this in mind, I urge you to read the enclosed information, and take action if necessary. If you live in a rental apartment, report the condition to your landlord. Bed bugs can travel easily through small holes and crevices. An infestation in one apartment can spread to another apartment. I will continue to monitor this problem to determine if any further action, legislation or regulation is needed. If you have any questions or comments about this, or any other subject, please call me.

IS IT NECESSARY TO USE PESTICIDES TO GET RID OF BED BUGS? The best way to get rid of bed bugs is to clean, disinfect and eliminate their hiding places. Since bed bugs can live for several months without food and water, pest control professionals may use a pesticide. Talk with the professional about safe use of pesticides and make sure he/she:
