President Bush is turning his back on New York’s children

Assemblyman William F. Boyland, Jr.:
President Bush: Wrong on health care!
Bush policy squashes states’ ability to provide much-needed health care to children

During this year’s budget negotiations, Assemblyman Boyland worked to pass legislation to expand New York’s Child Health Insurance Program to 400 percent of the poverty level - or $68,000 for a family of three - which would cover an additional 70,000 uninsured children.

Sadly, the Bush administration is once again ignoring those who need the most help by rejecting New York State’s effort to expand this health insurance program.

In fact, instead of working with state governments across the nation to help the millions of children without health insurance, the Bush administration has implemented a new policy that cripples states’ efforts to cover more children and imposes tremendous obstacles - denying children of working families the health care they so desperately need.

Assemblyman Boyland refuses to let the Bush administration slight our children. Even though the Bush administration is denying New York’s request to cover children with family incomes higher than 250 percent of the poverty level, Assemblyman Boyland will work with his/her colleagues in the Assembly, Governor Spitzer and New York’s congressional delegation to overturn this policy and get the health care coverage our children need and deserve.

"Just when we thought the Bush administration couldn’t sink any lower with its public policies, it adopts a horrible policy like this that hurts our most vulnerable - our children. It’s absolutely shocking."
- Assemblyman Boyland

I oppose the Bush administration’s policy regarding the Children’s Health Insurance Program. We have a responsibility to provide access to health insurance for all New York’s children, and I urge President Bush and Dennis Smith not to turn their backs on them.
