Assemblyman Michael Cusick, a member of both the Assembly Veterans' Affairs and Mental Health Committees participated in a joint hearing of the Assembly Mental Health, Veterans' Affairs and Alcoholism and Drug Abuse committees today in Albany. The purpose of the hearing was to examine services for New York State veterans who have been diagnosed with a substance abuse and/or mental health disorder to assure that all available resources are marshaled to help returning veterans and their families. Most of the testimony at the hearing centered on services provided to veterans and the most effective and efficient way to coordinate these services.

Throughout their military service, many veterans experience trauma during active duty, putting them in high risk categories for triggering substance abuse or mental health issues. More often than not, substance abuse and mental illness present themselves simultaneously or as a co-occurring disorder. The consequences of this, particularly when untreated or poorly treated, are severe.

"It is imperative that we help those who risk everything for our freedoms. That is why the services available to assist our heroes should not only be comprehensive, but also easy to access. Therefore, I proposed at this public hearing, a website and phone number (211) to serve as a 1 stop shop for veteran's that will provide all available information. The New York State Division of Veterans' Affairs will be looking into my proposal," said Cusick.

"Utilizing technology is a big step to ensuring our veterans receive the benefits available to them. A website, coupled with an easy to remember phone number, like 211, could keep veterans and their families informed on all helpful services," explained Assemblyman Cusick.
