Assemblywoman Hyer-Spencer: An ongoing commitment to helping women and children Fighting domestic violence.
A former legal director for My Sisters’ Place, a top non-profit in New York that helps victims of domestic violence, Assemblywoman Hyer-Spencer has witnessed firsthand the devastating effects domestic violence has on women and families, and she recognizes the need for better treatment for victims. That’s why this year she authored a new law that eliminates the fee for service of a civil order of protection, encouraging victims to come forward (Chapter 36 of 2007). In an effort to prevent the creation of future victims, she also supported a law that will toughen penalties for convicted sex offenders and keep the most dangerous of them off the streets (Chapter 7 of 2007). |
