Protecting the Environment
I am currently working to utilize funding provided through the federal Economic Recovery and Re-investment Act for the Weatherization Assistance Program in New York - a program that provides grants up to $6,500 for homeowners to weatherize their homes. Programs like this are the kind that I will continue to fight for - creating green jobs and re-creating lost jobs, while also lowering energy consumption, reducing greenhouse gases, and moving our state and nation toward energy independence.
I have also been fighting to increase the use and development of renewable energy, not only to help reduce our dependency on foreign oil, but also to help reduce our energy costs. I've:
-
Authored new laws to promote renewable energy sources for business and farms
-
Established a tax credit for renewable energy systems, generating equipment and solar energy
-
Passed a comprehensive package of environmental protection bills in the Assembly that takes action to address the threat of greenhouse gases and global warming, reduce waste and pollution, and encourage recycling.
-
Taken important steps to protect the health and safety of our communities by working with federal, state and local officials to limit mercury emissions released from industrial sites.
