Real property taxes are the oldest and most important source of revenue for local governments in New York state. In use for more than 200 years, property taxes generate more than two-thirds of all local tax dollars. Originally used as a source of revenue for cities, towns, villages and counties, property tax allocations have grown to serve the needs of school and special districts. School districts are the principal beneficiaries of property tax revenue. According to the state Office of Real Property Services, school districts receive about 61 percent of property tax revenue. Counties use nearly 18 percent, and the remaining 21 percent is shared by cities, towns, villages and special districts. |
