BUTLER SECURES PASSAGE OF DAIRY ASSISTANCE PROGRAM

During the final days leading toward the enactment of the state budget, Assemblyman Butler helped secure bipartisan passage of the Dairy Assistance Program. The program will help local dairy farmers who struggled with low milk prices last year.

The Dairy Assistance Program will provide $30 million in cash payments to eligible dairy farmers based on the difference of the targeted price of milk established by the Commissioner of Agriculture and Markets and the additional variables impacting milk prices.

While the $30 million in aid to dairy farmers is a significant step in relieving the burden of low milk prices in conjunction with high overhead costs and tax burdens placed on farmers, it falls extremely short of the $60 million Butler and many upstate lawmakers had sought. In the coming months, Butler will continue to fight for increased aid to dairy farmers and all farmers who serve as the foundation of New York’s economy.

Assemblyman Butler’s Agricultural Agenda

Restoring Prosperity for the Backbone of Our Economy

The farming community is the backbone of the Central New York and Mohawk Valley economies. However, many of our farmers are finding it difficult to make ends meet with increased costs, taxes and regulations.

In order to restore the prosperity of our farms and economy, Assemblyman Marc Butler has created a comprehensive agricultural agenda. Butler’s agenda would:

  • Restore hope in the future of farming in New York state with the establishment of the New York Farmer Recruitment and Retention Act;

  • Lower costs for farmers by providing low interest loans that will allow farmers to produce energy right on their own farms; and

  • Provide essential tax relief with the expansion of the Farmer’s School Tax Credit and the establishment of a real property tax credit that will serve as an incentive for farmers to switch to crops that can be used as ethanol.
