2008 Economic Stimulus Checks
Weekly Legislative Column by Assemblyman Marc Butler
The United States Congress passed and President George W. Bush signed into law the 2008 Economic Stimulus Package. Under this package, tens of millions of American taxpayers will receive checks from the federal government. To be eligible to receive a payment, taxpayers must have a valid Social Security number, at least $3,000 of income and have filed a 2007 federal tax return. The total amount that you will receive depends upon whether your 2007 federal tax returns were filed jointly, your gross income, and whether you have dependents. Most taxpayers will receive between $300 and $600 for singles and between $600 and $1,200 for couples. Even if you are exempt from filing a federal tax return, you must do so this year to be eligible for the stimulus check. The chart below will provide you with a schedule of when you can expect your check. For more information, you can go to the Internal Revenue Services’ website at www.irs.gov.
