A Day To Remember

Assemblyman Gary D. Finch (R,C-Springport) marked Memorial Day in Auburn by marching in the annual parade, participating in a medal award ceremony for veterans and speaking at the dedication of Cayuga County’s new World War II monument.

"Too often, we lose the meaning of Memorial Day. I was honored this year to be asked to march in the parade and publicly honor those soldiers who so valiantly and selflessly protected us," said Finch. "So many members from our community showed up for the parade and dedication ceremony that I was deeply touched, and I know it meant so much to our veterans."

Finch was able to secure a $10,000 state grant to help pay for construction of the new World War II monument, which includes images of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, D-Day, raising the U.S. flag at Iwo Jima and the names of all Cayuga County military personnel who died in the war.

"This monument serves as a reminder to all of us of the sacrifices our friends, family and neighbors made on our behalf, and also as a memorial to their lives," Finch concluded.
