I feel it is important to make sure those who serve our country through the military receive the honor, thanks and services entitled to them. It is especially important at this time, as many of our military men and women returning from overseas are having additional hardships brought about by the struggling economy.
As a member of the Veterans' Affairs committee, I helped pass and sponsored several bills which help veterans:
In 2008 a law was passed waiving court costs and filing fees for a civil court action a citizen-soldier initiated because of an event necessitated by their being called to active duty.
Also in 2008, I sponsored a bill to recognize June 1, 1983, as the beginning of the military conflict in Lebanon for veterans dealing with retirement and social security issues.
As a side note, I organize and sponsor the Central New York Veterans Parade. The event, held for the first time in 2008, featured more than 44 local veterans organizations, including representatives from local American Legions, VFW Posts, VA Medical Center, Eagle Association, and Army ROTC. Five local high school marching bands and the Syracuse University Pride of the Orange Band also performed in the parade. Soldiers from all branches of the armed forces, both active and reserve, drew much applause and many salutes as they advanced along the parade route.
The 2015 CNY Veterans Parade will be held Nov. 7 in downtown Syracuse. For more information, please visit the CNY Veterans Parade web site.
