LEADER’S
MESSAGE
Assemblyman Brian M. Kolb
Dear Friends,

As New Yorkers, we are fortunate to have such tremendous natural resources in our backyard and believe the quality of our environment is paramount to the quality of our life. As a resident of the Finger Lakes Region and avid outdoor enthusiast, I am equally committed to conserving, improving and protecting our natural resources. As the Assembly Minority Leader, I have an appreciation for the statewide economic benefits our tourism industry generates, infusing revenue into our local economies and sustaining much-needed jobs. In an effort to maintain this delicate balance, the Assembly Minority Conference and I will continue to work with sportsmen, conservationists and business leaders alike to safeguard our natural resources while encouraging the continued availability and utilization of New York’s numerous attractions.

Sincerely,

Attention Boaters & Anglers:
Don’t Spread Invasive Species!

Unless properly cleaned, dried or disinfected after use, boats, trailers, waders and other fishing and boating equipment can spread invasive species as anglers and boaters move from one body of water to another. Anglers and boaters are asked to be aware of the part they may play and take action to help protect our bodies of water and valuable native species. To avoid spreading invasive species, please follow these guidelines:

  1. INSPECT your boating and fishing equipment for invasive species.

  2. REMOVE any visible mud, plants, fish or animals before transporting equipment.

  3. CLEAN & DRY anything that comes into contact with water including boats, trailers, waders, bait buckets and other boating and fishing equipment. Disinfection recommendations vary depending upon the type of equipment and disease of concern, but certain household cleansers have been found to be especially effective, including bleach (soak equipment in 3 ounces of bleach mixed with 1 gallon of water), Formula 409®, and Fantastik®.

Calling all Campers!

New York State has a multitude of state-run campgrounds that offer a variety of recreational opportunities to enhance your camping experience. We hope you take the time to reconnect with New York’s beautiful outdoors this summer. Here are a few of our favorites:

Eighth Lake and Limekiln Lake, located near Old Forge, offer great fishing with boat rentals and hiking trails nearby. For campers looking for the traditional Adirondack camping experience with “tourist town” attractions and amenities, Old Forge is tough to beat.

For the dedicated Trout fisherman, New York has campgrounds on two of the best trout streams in the East. Wilmington Notch on the west branch of the Ausable River, and Beaverkill campground on the legendary river of the same name. Both campgrounds offer nearby hiking trails, with Wilmington offering access to the spectacular Adirondack High Peaks trails. Wilmington is nestled in the shadow of Whiteface Mountain, which has a road to the summit for the less adventurous.

For a more remote experience, head to Buck Pond about 25 miles north of Lake Placid. Buck Pond allows only electric or paddle-powered boats, has spacious, private campsites and is so quiet that your campfire conversation may very well be interrupted by the call of the loon.

For information on other sites or to make reservations, visit the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation website at: www.dec.ny.gov.

IMPORTANT FIREWOOD REMINDER:

The DEC regulation enacted last year to protect our forests from destructive tree insects and diseases is still in effect. The regulation prohibits the import of firewood into New York unless it has been heat treated to kill pests, and limits the transportation of untreated firewood to less than 50 miles from its source.
