Bill Reilich: Working to Ensure Every Student Receives a First-class Education!

INCREASED FUNDING FOR SCHOOLS

Bill Reilich knows education is the building block for a brighter future. He fought hard to ensure that all of our children receive a sound education. He also supported:

  • Flex Aid: $8.43 billion, an increase of $113.5 million over 2004-05 levels. Approximately 68% of the increase is targeted for use by 207 high-need school districts.

  • Special Education: $74.9 million increase, for a total of $2.6 billion, in Public & Private Excess Cost Aid, rejecting proposals to freeze or reduce the aid.

  • BOCES:$42.1 million increase, for a total of $689.7 million, in BOCES & Special Services Aid, rejecting proposals to freeze BOCES expenses and eliminate non-instructional and instructional support services as aid-eligible expenses.

  • Tax Limitation Aid: $87.46 million increase for a total of $135.4 million in Tax Limitation Aid in recognition of strong local support of schools and to keep taxes low.

MORE RESOURCES FOR TEACHERS, PARENTS AND STUDENTS

Bill Reilich supports, and even introduced, legislation and initiatives designed to provide teachers, parents and students with more resources to ensure the best possible learning experience, including:

  • Computer Laptop Pilot Program: Integrate wireless technology into participating schools that would receive wireless computer technology and software for students and teachers in grades 6-8, along with operating instructions.

  • Computer & School Supply Sales Tax-free Week: To assist parents with school supply costs, a sales tax-free week for all education-related purchases, as well as computer hardware and software, in conjunction with sales tax-free weeks on clothing in January and September.

  • Teacher Tax Credit: Provide up to a $500 tax credit for teachers in recognition of the contributions they make of their own funds to purchase classroom supplies, pay for field trips and help students.

  • Internet Gradebook Pilot Program: To make it easier for parents to track their children’s grades, attendance and assignments over the Internet. The program would give teachers a flexible system for tracking grades, the development of reports and presentation of student academic performance records.

SAFER, MORE EFFICIENT SCHOOLS

Bill Reilich believes schools should be violence- and harassment-free zones so students, teachers and administrators can participate in safe learning environments. His proposals would increase school safety by:

  • Reducing Hazing and Bullying in Schools: To provide further protections for students, teachers and school personnel, Bill Reilich favors harsher penalties for bullying and hazing, especially on and around school property.

  • Establishing a Statewide Bullying/Hazing Hot Line: The hot line - administered by the commissioner of education - would allow individuals to report instances of bullying and hazing. It would also require schools to develop programs designed to educate students on the negative impacts such activities have on their community.
