From The Desk Of John Ceretto
Recently, Governor Andrew Cuomo came to Western New York to announce his regional economic councils. At
that event, he received an invitation from me to visit Niagara Falls to discuss tourism at one of our
area's most famous landmarks, Niagara Falls State Park, which attracts approximately 12 million
visitors to the state each year.
State parks have been a focus of mine this legislative session, as I've sponsored legislation to finally
deliver Niagara County its fair share, both in parking revenues and Albany paying local property taxes
on state parklands, as several municipalities across the state enjoy. Furthermore, I've met with State
Parks Commissioner Rose Harvey regarding the need for immediate action to improve conditions at the
park.
In addition to discussing these investments, I have urged Governor Cuomo to sign legislation allowing
Nik Wallenda to traverse the Niagara Gorge on a high wire. This proposal has drawn interest across the
world: from the BBC, The Today Show, even The LA Times. While Nik Wallenda's visit may not be a
cure-all, it can be a major step in the right direction toward rebuilding the American side of the
Falls.
It is my hope that the state will invest in this region to help make our natural wonder the
centerpiece of a growing tourism industry drawing visitors from across the country as well as the
globe. I plan to make that case to Governor Cuomo and very much would like for him to see all that
Niagara Falls has to offer with his own eyes.
