LEGISLATIVE ACTION
The Legislature provides a total local arts grants increase of
$4,000,000, bringing the amount available to the Council on the Arts
for grants to non-profit cultural organizations to $40,700,000.
Legislative Reductions
The Legislature rejected the Executive`s proposal to create the Office
of Cultural Resources which would assume jurisdiction over the State
Museum, the State Library and the State Archives. The administration
of these entities will remain within the State Education Department
(SED).
Article VII
The Legislature provides language stipulating that the Council on the
Arts distribute grants in accordance with the following provisions:
-- That the residents in each county receive arts grants
proportionate to at least 40 cents per capita;
-- That not less than 50 percent of grants are awarded to primary
arts organizations; and
-- That the plan authorize a decentralization program for grant
awards under $5,000.
In addition, the Legislature provides language stipulating that
$200,000 in assistance to the arts shall be used to assist nonprofit
cultural organizations develop cultural tourism initiatives.
