On the state level...
New York State Energy Research and Development Authority
The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) announces the availability of up to $10 million in funds to support research and engineering studies, product development and demonstration projects that improve the reliability, efficiency, quality, and overall performance of the electric power delivery system in New York State. Proposals must demonstrate significant statewide public benefit and quantify all energy, environmental and economic impacts. Technology demonstrations, product development and studies are eligible for funding under this solicitation. The primary objective of the program is to promote the development of a smart grid that accommodates a diverse supply of generation resources, enhances overall grid performance and enables customers to reduce costs, energy consumption, and environmental impacts.

Eligibility: Projects that promote smart grid technologies, components and/or systems both within and outside of the six New York regulated electric service territories (Consolidated Edison, Orange and Rockland, New York State Electric and Gas, Rochester Gas and Electric, Central Hudson Gas and Electric, and National Grid) and meet the Program Requirements are eligible for funding under this solicitation. All projects must demonstrate broad public benefit.

Department of Environmental Conservation
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation is accepting applications for the Household Hazardous Waste State Assistance Program. These recycling programs can consist of single-day collections, mobile collections or a permanent facility. Collection-day sponsors must submit a detailed plan to the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation at least 60 days before a collection day takes place. Sponsors must also obtain the DEC’s written approval prior to collection day.

Eligibility: Only municipalities are eligible to participate in this program. Under this program, a municipality is any: county, city, town, or village; local public authority or public benefit corporation; school district or supervisory district; or Native American tribe or nation located within New York State.

Funding: The state can provide funding for up to 50 percent reimbursement of the municipal HHW collection program costs. Funding is limited to a maximum of $2 million per project.

Deadline: Applications accepted on an ongoing basis for consideration in January, April, July or October.

Health Resources and Services Administration
Health centers improve the health of the Nation’s underserved communities and vulnerable populations by assuring access to comprehensive, culturally competent, quality primary health care services. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) solicits applications for the Health Center Program’s Service Area Competition (SAC). A SAC application is a request for Federal financial assistance to support comprehensive primary health care services for a competitively announced underserved area or population.

Department of Health and Human Services
The Department of Health and Human Services invites new and renewal applications for the George M. O’Brien Kidney Research Core Centers to support both basic and clinical research on kidney disease. The goal of the O’Brien Kidney Research Core Center program is to make state-of-the art technologies and resources readily accessible to a broad spectrum of investigators who are pursuing studies in relevant topic areas. The Centers will also support pilot and feasibility studies to develop and test innovative approaches to therapy. The O’Brien Research Core Centers aim is to provide unique resources for communication and collaboration between basic and clinical researchers in the field of kidney disease.

On the private level...
Lowe’s Toolbox for Education
The Lowe’s Toolbox for Education program provides grant awards to support school improvement projects at K-12 public schools. Now in its sixth year, the program has donated over $30 million to more than 6,000 schools. For the 2012-13 school year program, the foundation will give priority to basic necessities. There is a preference for funding requests that have a permanent impact such as facility enhancement (both indoor and outdoor), landscaping/cleanup projects as well as technology-based improvements. Projects that encourage parent involvement and build stronger community spirit are encouraged.

Eligibility: Any individual U.S. public K-12 school or nonprofit parent group associated with a public K-12 school is eligible to apply. Parent groups that are applying (PTO, PTA, etc.) must have an independent EIN and official 501(c)(3) status from the IRS.

Funding: Grant requests must be between $2,000 and $5,000 per school. Lowe’s will donate $5 million to schools and school parent/teacher groups at more than 1,000 different schools during the school year.

The Foundation Center has scheduled the following free training classes in
New York City during October 2012:
Grant-seeking Basics: October 2, 31
Attendees will learn how the Center’s resources help make them more effective grantseekers. For beginners, this introduction to the library provides instruction in foundation research and identification of potential funders. A tour of the library will follow.
Introduction to Finding Funders: October 2, 31
This class provides a hands-on introduction on how to use the center’s comprehensive online database – The Foundation Directory Online – to research and identify potential funders. The Foundation Directory Online contains over 100,000 profiles of grant-making institutions.
Proposal Budgeting Basics:October 4
Attendees will learn how to prepare and present a budget in a grant proposal. This session is geared toward novice grantseekers.
Proposal Writing Basics: October 4
Attendees will learn about the basics of writing a proposal for their nonprofit organization.
How to Approach a Foundation: October 10
Attendees will learn how to initiate contact with potential donors, plan calls and meetings, and build partnerships with sponsors. This class is intended for fundraisers who have some experience but are not experts.
