National Science Foundation
The National Science Foundation (NSF) announces the new solicitation for the Hydrologic Sciences Program which focuses on the fluxes of water in the environment that constitute the water cycle as well as the mass and energy transport function of the water cycle in the environment. The Program retains a strong focus on linking the fluxes of water and the components carried by water across the boundaries between various interacting components of the terrestrial system and the mechanisms by which these fluxes co-organize over a variety of timescales and/or alter the fundamentals of the interacting components. This context for the Hydrologic Sciences Program is based on the National Academy of Sciences (2012) report entitled “Challenges and Opportunities in the Hydrologic Sciences” as well as other documents including “Basic Research Opportunities in Earth Science” (NAS, 2001); and “Geovision Report (NSF, 2009). These documents identify multiple questions whose answers are central to the understanding of temporal and spatial variability of the water cycle across Earth’s landscapes. The NSF is committed to supporting the most meritorious research in the relevant areas, including interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary research, as well as research involving international collaboration. A proposal should present the (1) objectives and scientific, engineering, or educational significance of the proposed work; (2) suitability of the methods to be employed; (3) qualifications of the investigator and the grantee organization; (4) effect of the activity on the infrastructure of science, engineering and education; and (5) amount of funding required. The Hydrologic Sciences program is not interested in case studies or applied studies that examine site specific problems where knowledge gained will have only limited transferable value.
-

Scholars Awards…
Ellison Medical Foundation
The Ellison Medical Foundation is accepting Letters of Intent for its 2013 EMF Neuroscience Scholar Awards, a program designed to provide researchers with the support and resources they need to gain insight into the fundamental molecular and cellular mechanisms that underlie normal biological function and, when dysfunctional, lead to illness. Up to five New Scholars and five Senior Scholars will be awarded grants to stimulate and nurture research that seeks to gain an understanding of the neurobiological basis of aggression and related behaviors, and of the environmental and genetic factors that contribute to violence and antisocial disorders. Note that the program is intended to support basic research projects rather than clinical interventions, and for the 2013 application cycle, only projects directly related to the study of aggressive behaviors will be considered.
-
Eligibility:
To be eligible for the New Scholars award, applicants must be within the first three years of their independent research career. All other applicants are eligible for the Senior Scholar award. Candidates must hold regular full-time appointments (tenure or non-tenure) on the faculty of the sponsoring institution by June 15, 2013.
-
Funding:
Each New Scholar will receive a grant of up to $100,000 per year, total costs, for a four-year period. Senior Scholar awards will be made for up to $150,000, direct costs, per year, plus full indirect costs at the institution’s NIH-negotiated rate, for up to four years. Funding for years two, three, and four is contingent on submission of an acceptable progress report. Note that a budget is not required at the letter of intent stage but will be requested of those candidates that are invited to submit a full proposal following the initial review.

William T. Grant Scholars Award
The William T. Grant Scholars Program supports promising early-career researchers from diverse disciplines, who have demonstrated success in conducting high-quality research and are seeking to further develop and broaden their expertise. Candidates are nominated by a supporting institution and must submit five-year research plans that demonstrate creativity, intellectual rigor, and a commitment to continued professional development. Research must address issues that have a compelling relevance for theory, policies or practices, affecting the settings of youth ages 8 to 25 in the United States or a vulnerable subpopulation of those youth.
The Foundation’s current research interests are:
-
How youth settings work, how they affect youth development, and how they can be improved; and
-
When, how, and under what conditions research evidence is used in policy and practice that affect youth, and how its use can be improved.
-
Eligibility:
The program is designed for early-career researchers. Investigators at all nonprofit institutions, both in the United States and abroad, are eligible as long as their research bears strong relevance for youth in the United States. Applicants must have received their terminal degree within seven years of submitting their application and be in a career-ladder position. This is calculated by adding seven years to the date the doctoral degree was conferred. In medicine, the seven-year maximum is dated from the completion of the first residency. The award may not be used as a post-doctoral fellowship.
-
Funding:
Award recipients are designated William T. Grant Scholars. Each year, four to six Scholars are selected and each receives $350,000, distributed over five years.
