New York State Department of Health

The Empire State Stem Cell Board (ESSCB) is requesting applications for funding of basic, applied, translational and other research designed to advance scientific discoveries in fields related to stem cell biology. The ESSCB aims to stimulate and support basic, applied (mechanistic, technological), translational, pre-clinical and clinical scientific investigations on any aspect of stem cell biology that will lead to a better understanding of the unique properties of stem cells and allow their utilization to treat disease. There are two tracks researchers may apply for:

1. Investigator Initiated Research Project (IIRP), which is designed to:

  • Investigate a well-developed problem or research hypothesis; or
  • Develop technologies or resources that are essential to overcome existing barriers to progress toward therapeutic applications

2. Innovative, Developmental or Exploratory Activities (IDEA), which is designed to:

  • Open a new area of investigation;
  • Test a novel or innovative hypothesis;
  • Produce viable data for preparation of a full-scale research application; or
  • Apply or develop state-of-the-art technologies, tools or resources for stem cell research.
  • Eligibility: Applicants must be a not-for-profit or governmental organization located in New York State that has a major research component, i.e. a research organization or an academic research institution. All projects must have a Principal Investigator. The eligible Principal Investigator (PI) is designated by the applicant institution, has the skills, knowledge, and resources necessary to carry out the proposed Workplan, and is not a postdoctoral fellow or other dependent research staff. At the time of application and award acceptance, the PI must not be restricted from receiving Public Health Service (PHS) funding or be debarred by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) or any other federal or New York State government entity.

  • Funding: Approximately $25,000,000 is available to support approximately 34 awards

  • Deadline: Letter of Intent due by June 5, 2013; Application due by July 30, 2013.

New York State Energy Research and Development Authority

The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) announces the availability of approximately $13.8 million in incentives to encourage the installation of end-use wind energy systems for residential, commercial, institutional or government use. The incentives, of up to $100,000 per site/customer, will be paid to Eligible Installers who install new approved grid-connected wind energy systems using qualified equipment, in accordance with the eligibility requirements. An on-site wind energy system is connected on the customer’s side of the electric meter and electricity generated by the system offsets the customer’s electricity purchases.

On the federal level...

National Science Foundation

The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy and the National Science Foundation (NSF) are now accepting nominations for the 2014 Presidential Awards for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring (PAESMEM). The NSF seeks nominations for individuals and organizations that have demonstrated at least five years of excellence in mentoring students, trainees, and/or early career scientists and engineers from groups that are underrepresented in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Groups that are underrepresented in STEM include women, people with disabilities, underrepresented racial and ethnic minorities, as well as individuals from low socio-economic backgrounds and certain geographic regions (i.e. urban and rural).

National Science Foundation

The National Science Foundation (NSF) announces the new solicitation for the Hydrologic Sciences Program which focuses on the fluxes of water in the environment that constitute the water cycle as well as the mass and energy transport function of the water cycle in the environment. The Program retains a strong focus on linking the fluxes of water and the components carried by water across the boundaries between various interacting components of the terrestrial system and the mechanisms by which these fluxes co-organize over a variety of timescales and/or alter the fundamentals of the interacting components. This context for the Hydrologic Sciences Program is based on the National Academy of Sciences (2012) report entitled “Challenges and Opportunities in the Hydrologic Sciences” as well as other documents including “Basic Research Opportunities in Earth Science” (NAS, 2001); and “Geovision Report (NSF, 2009). These documents identify multiple questions whose answers are central to the understanding of temporal and spatial variability of the water cycle across Earth’s landscapes. The NSF is committed to supporting the most meritorious research in the relevant areas, including interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary research, as well as research involving international collaboration. A proposal should present the (1) objectives and scientific, engineering, or educational significance of the proposed work; (2) suitability of the methods to be employed; (3) qualifications of the investigator and the grantee organization; (4) effect of the activity on the infrastructure of science, engineering and education; and (5) amount of funding required. The Hydrologic Sciences program is not interested in case studies or applied studies that examine site specific problems where knowledge gained will have only limited transferable value.

Pioneer Drama Service

The Pioneer Drama Service is accepting video contest entries from middle and high schools to support drama programs nationwide. Through The Show Must Go On contest, Pioneer Drama will award more than $10,000 in scripts and royalties to middle and high schools for three-minute videos created by students and staff that demonstrate why “the show must go on” at their school. Videos should demonstrate what the drama club or program is like now and why it wants to win the contest. In addition, entries should address how the drama club or program helps the school and students, the obstacles it has overcome, and how putting on a play will touch other lives. Middle school and high school entries will be judged separately.

Scholars Awards…

Ellison Medical Foundation

The Ellison Medical Foundation is accepting Letters of Intent for its 2013 EMF Neuroscience Scholar Awards, a program designed to provide researchers with the support and resources they need to gain insight into the fundamental molecular and cellular mechanisms that underlie normal biological function and, when dysfunctional, lead to illness. Up to five New Scholars and five Senior Scholars will be awarded grants to stimulate and nurture research that seeks to gain an understanding of the neurobiological basis of aggression and related behaviors, and of the environmental and genetic factors that contribute to violence and antisocial disorders. Note that the program is intended to support basic research projects rather than clinical interventions, and for the 2013 application cycle, only projects directly related to the study of aggressive behaviors will be considered.

William T. Grant Scholars Award

The William T. Grant Scholars Program supports promising early-career researchers from diverse disciplines, who have demonstrated success in conducting high-quality research and are seeking to further develop and broaden their expertise. Candidates are nominated by a supporting institution and must submit five-year research plans that demonstrate creativity, intellectual rigor, and a commitment to continued professional development. Research must address issues that have a compelling relevance for theory, policies or practices, affecting the settings of youth ages 8 to 25 in the United States or a vulnerable subpopulation of those youth.
