        Introduced  by M. of A. BUTTENSCHON, CLARK, LUNSFORD, MANKTELOW, NORRIS,
          STIRPE, WALSH, WOERNER -- read once and referred to the  Committee  on
          Corporations,  Authorities  and  Commissions  -- committee discharged,
          bill amended, ordered reprinted as amended  and  recommitted  to  said
          committee

        AN  ACT  to  amend  the canal law, in relation to the general powers and
          duties of the canal corporation
 
          The People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and  Assem-
        bly, do enact as follows:
 
     1    Section  1.  Subdivision 14 of section 10 of the canal law, as amended
     2  by chapter 420 of the laws of 1968, is amended and two new  subdivisions
     3  6-a and 8-a are added to read as follows:
     4    6-a.  Cause the locks and lift bridges of the canal system to be oper-
     5  ated annually for the passage of  commercial  and  recreational  traffic
     6  between  May first and November fifteenth, generally, subject to natural
     7  conditions, weather, required maintenance, capital rehabilitation  work,
     8  or other factors related to safe canal operation.
     9    8-a.  Maintain and preserve the integrity of the Erie Canal's historic
    10  resources, including its structures, floating plant, and unique landside
    11  features.
    12    14. Permit boat owners operating upon the canal system  to  use  state
    13  drydocks  while  making  emergency  repairs to their vessels.  Provided,
    14  however, that commercial boat companies operating upon the canal  system
    15  may be permitted to use state drydocks, travel lifts or other facilities
    16  for  required coast guard drydock inspections, for non-navigation season
    17  storage, or while making emergency repairs to  their  vessels  at  rates
    18  prescribed  under subchapter D of chapter III of title twenty-one of the
    19  New York state codes, rules, and regulations.
    20    § 2. This act shall take effect immediately.
