AN ACT to amend the civil service law, in relation to additional credit
allowed veterans in competitive examinations; preference in retention
upon abolition of positions
The People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and Assem-bly, do enact as follows:
1 Section 1. Paragraph (a) of subdivision 1 of section 85 of the civil
2 service law, as amended by chapter 333 of the laws of 1993, is amended
3 to read as follows:
4 (a) The terms "veteran" and "non-disabled veteran" mean a member of
5 the armed forces of the United States who served therein in time of war,
6 who was honorably discharged or released under honorable circumstances
7 from such service, who is a citizen of the United States or an alien
8 lawfully admitted for permanent residence in the United States and who
9 is a resident of the state of New York at the time of application for
10 appointment or promotion or at the time of retention, as the case may
11 be. The terms "veteran" and "non-disabled veteran" shall also mean the
12 spouse and/or children of a member of the armed forces of the United
13 States who served therein in time of war and was subsequently killed in
14 the line of duty.
15 § 2. This act shall take effect immediately.
