AN ACT to require the New York state department of transportation to
conduct a study to evaluate the configuration and signage of entrance
and exit ramps on the Southern State Parkway in Nassau and Suffolk
counties to determine whether adequate safety measures exist to
prevent collisions and the instance of wrong way drivers
The People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and Assem-bly, do enact as follows:
1 Section 1. The department of transportation shall, in consultation
2 with the department of motor vehicles, the governor's traffic safety
3 committee, the division of state police, local police agencies, local
4 governments, and any other department, division, board, bureau, commis-
5 sion, agency or public authority of the state or any political subdivi-
6 sion thereof deemed necessary by the commissioner of transportation,
7 conduct a study to evaluate the configuration and signage of entrance
8 and exit ramps on the Southern State Parkway in Nassau and Suffolk coun-
9 ties to review incidents of collisions and wrong way driving on such
10 Parkway and to determine the feasibility of improvements to reduce such
11 collisions and instances of wrong way driving. Such study shall include,
12 but not be limited to, design and safety of the configuration of
13 entrance and exit ramps and the feasibility of implementing design
14 changes to increase safety and reduce the likelihood of collisions and
15 wrong way driving; the design and level of safety of the signage located
16 at entrance and exit ramps of such Parkway and the feasibility of imple-
17 menting signage design changes to increase the visibility of such
18 signage to drivers and reduce the likelihood of collisions and wrong way

1 driving; and federal funding available for such highway safety improve-
2 ment projects.
3 § 2. The commissioner of transportation shall submit a report of such
4 study with detailed recommendations and findings to the governor, the
5 temporary president of the senate, the speaker of the assembly, and the
6 chairs of the senate and assembly transportation committees within two
7 years of the effective date of this act.
8 § 3. This act shall take effect immediately.
