MOURNING the death of Daniel L. Smith, selfless
veteran, town highway superintendent, and devoted
member of his community
WHEREAS, Within every community of the State of New York there are
certain individuals who, by virtue of their commitment and dedication,
command the respect and admiration of their community for their
exemplary contributions and service on behalf of others; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to mourn publicly
those distinguished citizens who demonstrated great courage and
diligence in providing for the care and welfare of the citizens of their
communities and this great Empire State; and
WHEREAS, With feelings of deepest regret, this Legislative Body
records the passing of Daniel L. Smith, who died in a tragic accident on
Tuesday, May 14, 2019, at the age of 50; and
WHEREAS, Daniel L. Smith, affectionately known as Danny, was born to
June and Francis Leon Smith on May 30, 1968, in Sidney, New York; and
WHEREAS, Daniel L. Smith will always be remembered as a man who
loved his family, his country and his community; a proud veteran of the
United States Marines, he worked for the Town of Colesville Department
of Public Works, and was recently appointed the Afton Highway
Superintendent, a job he was eager to fulfill; and
WHEREAS, This remarkable man also held various coaching positions
for youth athletics, and was the Head Coach for the Whitney Point High
School Varsity Football Team; in this role, he enthusiastically guided,
molded and inspired his team members toward their goals; and
WHEREAS, Daniel L. Smith truly led by example, and in doing so, has
left a lasting impact on the Town of Afton, the county of Chenango, and
New York State as a whole; and
WHEREAS, Predeceased by his father, Francis Leon, and brother, David
Benjamin, Daniel L. Smith is survived by his wife, Sabrina; five
children, Ashley (Alexander), Danny, Dylan, Avrielle and Parker; his
mother, June; one brother, William (Kathi); one sister, Judy (Mark); and
several family members, as well as numerous friends and students who
will long cherish his memory; and
WHEREAS, A man of great compassion and determination, Daniel L.
Smith's legacy extends far beyond his accomplishments as a successful
public servant; his sincere concern for others; his integrity,
unconditional friendship and selfless motivation to give of himself,
will long stand as a beacon for those who would aspire to service in
their community; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
mourn the death of Daniel L. Smith, selfless veteran, town highway
superintendent, and devoted member of his community, recognizing the
significance of his exemplary record of public service; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the family of Daniel L. Smith.
