Senate Resolution No. 1969

        COMMENDING  legendary news anchor Carol Silva upon
        the occasion of her retirement after  more  than  30
        years of dedicated service to News 12 Long Island
 
  WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
those illustrious newscasters who have diligently and consistently, year
after  year, recorded the history of their communities and brought local
news and news of the larger world to their readers; and
 
  WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and  in  full  accord  with  its
long-standing  traditions,  this  Legislative  Body  is  justly proud to
commend legendary news anchor Carol  Silva  upon  the  occasion  of  her
retirement  after  33 years of dedicated service to News 12 Long Island;
and
 
  WHEREAS,  A  native  Long  Islander,  Carol  Silva  was  raised   in
Hicksville,  New  York, where she attended Holy Trinity High School; she
graduated from Nassau Community College, the University of  Dayton,  and
New York Institute of Technology; and
 
  WHEREAS, Carol Silva began her long and distinguished career working
at  Long Island radio newsrooms at WGBB, WGSM, and WLIR, and in New York
City at WNBC, WOR, WKTU  Radio,  the  RKO  Radio  Network  and  WNET-PBS
Television; and
 
  WHEREAS,  In 1986, Carol Silva joined News 12 Long Island as a field
reporter, but started anchoring six days later; for the last  33  years,
she has served as co-anchor of the "Mornings with 12," the position from
which she will officially retire at the end of 2019; and
 
  WHEREAS,  For  her  steadfast  and  unremitting  commitment  to  her
profession, Carol  Silva  was  the  recipient  of  numerous  awards  and
accolades  including an Honorary Doctorate in 2018, from her alma mater,
New York Institute of Technology; on June 6, 2019, she was inducted into
the Long Island Journalism Hall of Fame; and
 
  WHEREAS, Carol Silva was named a Woman of  Distinction  by  the  New
York  State  Senate and a Top 50 Woman of Long Island by the Long Island
Business  News,  and  received  the  TRISCORT  Award  by  the   Catholic
Archdiocese of New York; and
 
  WHEREAS,  Carol  Silva  also won three Emmy Awards and dozens of New
York State Associated Press, Press Club, Regional CableAce, Long  Island
Coalition for Fair Broadcasting and other journalism awards; and
 
  WHEREAS,  For  over  three  decades,  Carol Silva's face appeared on
numerous television screens in Long Island; known for  her  wit,  humor,
and  sunny  personality,  she  is  an institution in newcasting, and her
presence on television will be greatly missed by many; and
 
  WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative  Body  that  those  who
enhance the quality of life in their community and have shown a long and
sustained  commitment  to  the  maintenance  of  high standards in their
 
profession, certainly have earned the recognition and  applause  of  all
the citizens of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
 
  RESOLVED,  That  this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend legendary news anchor Carol  Silva  upon  the  occasion  of  her
retirement  after  33 years of dedicated service to News 12 Long Island,
and to wish her continued success in all her future endeavors; and be it
further
 
  RESOLVED, That a copy of this  Resolution,  suitably  engrossed,  be
transmitted to Carol Silva.
