MOURNING the death of William J. Leahy, longtime
Port Authority Police Officer, distinguished citizen
and devoted member of his community
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to convey its
grateful appreciation and heartfelt regret in recognition of the loss of
a courageous and hardworking police officer who dedicated his purposeful
life and career in faithful service to both his family and the residents
of New York State; and
WHEREAS, It is also with profound sorrow that this Legislative Body,
representing the people of the State of New York, is moved this day to
pay tribute to an eminent man of indomitable dedication whose public
service and countless accomplishments will forever stand as a paradigm
and inspiration for others; and
WHEREAS, William "Billy" James Leahy of Levittown, New York, died on
Thursday, June 6, 2019, at the age of 49; and
WHEREAS, William J. Leahy grew up in Hicksville, New York, where he
attended Hicksville High School and had an especially close relationship
with his family; and
WHEREAS, After serving with the NYPD for one year, William J. Leahy
began his illustrious career with the Port Authority in 1993, working in
the agency's marine, cargo and heavy weapons units, as well as the
plainclothes unit at Kennedy Airport; and
WHEREAS, During his 26-year tenure with the Port Authority, William
J. Leahy was one of the brave first responders who spent days
participating in the rescue and recovery efforts after the horrific
World Trade Center 9/11 attack; and
WHEREAS, William J. Leahy distinguished himself in his profession
and by his sincere dedication and substantial contribution to the
welfare of his community; he will be remembered as a caring, funny and
loyal man who truly loved his family and friends; and
WHEREAS, Armed with a humanistic spirit and imbued with a sense of
compassion, William J. Leahy leaves behind a legacy which will long
endure the passage of time and will remain as a comforting memory to all
he served and befriended; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
mourn the death of William J. Leahy, longtime Port Authority Police
Officer, distinguished citizen and devoted member of his community; and
be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the parents of William J. Leahy, William and Kathleen
Leahy.
