HONORING Reverend Jim Phegley upon the occasion of
his retirement after more than 34 years of
distinguished service to Glen Cove Christian Church
WHEREAS, The character and richness of religious and community life
in this noble Empire State is nourished and fulfilled through the
faithful concern and selfless devotion of those who would commit their
energies and purpose to the ministry of others; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to bring full
recognition and just tribute to those individuals who distinguish
themselves and the ministry through their unremitting commitment and
preeminence of service; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Reverend Jim Phegley upon the occasion of his retirement after more than
34 years of distinguished service to Glen Cove Christian Church, to be
celebrated with a party in his honor on Sunday, July 7, 2019, at The
View Grill in Glen Cove, New York; and
WHEREAS, After serving as a missionary in Costa Rica, Reverend Jim
Phegley came to Glen Cove to start one of the first Spanish-speaking
congregations, La Iglesia Cristiana; and
WHEREAS, Reverend Jim Phegley became the Pastor and Senior Minister
of Glen Cove Christian Church in 1987, during which time the church had
32 members; under his able leadership, the congregation has grown to a
membership of more than 200; and
WHEREAS, With a steadfast and unwavering commitment to the Glen Cove
community, Reverend Jim Phegley was the first President of the North
Shore Sheltering Program where he served on the Board for 20 years; and
WHEREAS, In addition, he was the first Team Leader of the ACT Team
at the Melillo Center for Mental Health and the Board Chairman of La
Fuerza Unida for many years; and
WHEREAS, Jim Phegley proudly served his country as a member of the
United States Navy from 1971 to 1975, where he met and married his wife,
Sarah Ann; and
WHEREAS, Upon the completion of his military service, Jim Phegley
moved back to his hometown of Flint, Michigan, during which time he
received his degree as a registered nurse from Mott Community College;
he went on to earn a Bachelor's degree in Ministry and Nursing from
Johnson University in Knoxville, Tennessee; and
WHEREAS, While serving as Senior Minister to Glen Cove Christian
Church, Reverend Jim Phegley obtained a Master of Arts degree in
Cross-Cultural Communication from Hope International University; and
WHEREAS, In addition to his wife, with him throughout have been his
two children and five grandchildren, who have all shown him love and
support and rejoice in his many achievements; and
WHEREAS, This distinguished man of God has always given
enlightenment, guidance and wisdom to the many entrusted to his care and
has administered abundantly and unstintingly to the spiritual and
corporal needs of all; and
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body that when a
person of such noble aims and accomplishments is brought to our
attention, it is appropriate to publicly and jubilantly proclaim and
commend that individual for the edification of others; now, therefore,
be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Reverend Jim Phegley upon the occasion of his retirement after
more than 34 years of distinguished service to Glen Cove Christian
Church; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Reverend Jim Phegley.
