HONORING the life and legacy of Zone Sergeant
James G. Sweeney
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize and
honor those distinguished officers and citizens who would devote
themselves to public service, demonstrating great courage and diligence
in providing for the care and welfare of the citizens of their
communities and this great Empire State; and
WHEREAS, Within every community of the State of New York there are
certain individuals who, by virtue of their commitment and dedication,
command the respect and admiration of their community for their
exemplary contributions and service on behalf of others; and
WHEREAS, Born on March 25, 1952, in Manhattan, New York, Zone
Sergeant James G. Sweeney led a remarkably accomplished life; on August
28, 1976, he married Noreen Di Marzio, the love of his life; and
WHEREAS, After the events on September 11, 2001, Zone Sergeant James
G. Sweeney was assigned to New York City as part of the New York State
Police Detail to aid with the search and recovery efforts; and
WHEREAS, Joining the State Police on February 20, 1978, Zone
Sergeant James G. Sweeney served for 29 years and retired on February
27, 2007; and
WHEREAS, Influencing positive change, Zone Sergeant James G. Sweeney
helped to rename two overpasses in memoriam to two of his fallen
colleagues; he was a proud member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians,
the Fraternal Order of Police, the International Police Association, and
the Knights of Columbus; and
WHEREAS, As a testament to his incredible impact on New York State,
a bill was passed in his honor to amend the highway law to designate a
portion of the state highway system as the "Zone Sergeant James G.
Sweeney Memorial Bridge"; and
WHEREAS, Zone Sergeant James G. Sweeney of New York City, New York,
died on March 6, 2021, at the age of 68; and
WHEREAS, Zone Sergeant James G. Sweeney's commitment to excellence,
and his spirit of humanity, carried over into all fields of enterprise,
including charitable and civic endeavors; and
WHEREAS, Zone Sergeant James G. Sweeney is survived by his wife,
Noreen, son, and three daughters; and
WHEREAS, Armed with a humanistic spirit and imbued with a sense of
compassion, Zone Sergeant James G. Sweeney leaves behind a legacy which
will long endure the passage of time and will remain as a comforting
memory to all he served and befriended; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor the life and legacy of Zone Sergeant James G. Sweeney; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the family of Zone Sergeant James G. Sweeney.
