Assembly Resolution No. 570

BY: M. of A. Ra

MEMORIALIZING Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to proclaim
July 15, 2019, as Pet Fire Safety Day in the State
        of New York

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize
official days that are set aside to increase awareness of serious issues
that affect the lives of citizens of New York State; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, it is the intent of this Legislative Body to
memorialize Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to proclaim July 15, 2019, as Pet
Fire Safety Day in the State of New York, in conjunction with the
observance of National Pet Fire Safety Day; and

WHEREAS, National Pet Fire Safety Day is observed annually on July
15th; just like fire drills, pets need consideration when preparing for
unexpected fire emergencies; and

WHEREAS, Established by the American Kennel Club, Pet Fire Safety
Day seeks to bring to light the importance of being trained and aware of
the additional dangers associated with house fires involving pets; and

WHEREAS, Taking preventable measures now can save both your home and
your pet; many times our pets can cause a fire if we do not take the
proper steps; and

WHEREAS, According to the National Fire Protection Association
around 1,000 house fires are started annually by house pets, and an
additional 500,000 pets are affected by house fires annually; and

WHEREAS, Fire started by pets can lead to serious damage to a home
and potential loss of life, and fires affecting pets can cause injury to
them or loss of the pet's life as well; and

WHEREAS, Many New Yorkers remain unaware of the dangers associated
with pet fires so it is imperative that there be greater awareness of
this serious issue, and more must be done to increase activity at the
local, State and National levels; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
memorialize Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to proclaim July 15, 2019, as Pet
Fire Safety Day in the State of New York; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to The Honorable Andrew M. Cuomo, Governor of the State of
New York.
