Assembly Resolution No. 786

        COMMEMORATING   the   100th   Anniversary  of  the
        American Legion Auxiliary Department of New York
 
  WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize  that
the  quality  and  character  of life in the communities across New York
State are reflective of the concerned and  dedicated  efforts  of  those
patriotic  organizations  and  individuals  who devote themselves to the
welfare of the community and its citizenry; and
 
  WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and  in  full  accord  with  its
long-standing  traditions,  this  Legislative  Body  is  justly proud to
commemorate the 100th  Anniversary  of  the  American  Legion  Auxiliary
Department of New York; and
 
  WHEREAS, The American Legion was chartered by Congress in 1919, as a
patriotic veteran's organization; and
 
  WHEREAS,  Focusing  on  service  to  veterans,  service  members and
communities, the American Legion evolved from a group  of  World  War  I
veterans into one of the most influential nonprofit groups in the United
States; and
 
  WHEREAS,   Over  the  years,  the  American  Legion  has  influenced
considerable social change in America,  won  hundreds  of  benefits  for
veterans  and  produced  many important programs for children and youth;
currently, membership stands at over 2.4 million  in  more  than  14,000
posts worldwide; and
 
  WHEREAS,  Founded  in 1919, The American Legion Auxiliary has nearly
one million members from all walks of life, and has promoted patriotism,
encouraged  good  citizenship,  and  has   steadfastly   supported   the
principles and endeavors of the American Legion for 100 years; and
 
  WHEREAS,  With  an  unwavering  commitment  to  its  community,  the
American Legion Auxiliary administers hundreds  of  volunteer  programs,
gives tens of thousands of hours to its communities and to veterans, and
raises millions of dollars to support its own programs, as well as other
worthwhile charities; and
 
  WHEREAS,  While  originally organized to assist The American Legion,
over the past  century,  the  Auxiliary  has  achieved  its  own  unique
identity   while  working  side-by-side  with  local  veterans  and  the
community at large; and
 
  WHEREAS, Committed to  the  four  founding  principles  of  Justice,
Freedom,  Democracy  and  Loyalty,  the Auxiliary embodies the spirit of
America that has  prevailed  through  war  and  peace;  along  with  the
American Legion, it stands solidly behind America and her ideals; and
 
  WHEREAS, Furthermore, this vital organization has served as a living
commitment  to  service  since  its  inception  through programs such as
American Legion Family College, Americanism, Auxiliary  Emergency  Fund,
 
Children  and  Youth,  Community  Service, the Poppy Program and Warrior
Family Assistance; and
 
  WHEREAS,  The success of the American Legion Auxiliary Department of
New York is in direct  correlation  to  the  efforts  of  its  dedicated
members  and  volunteers,  whose  involvement  is,  and always has been,
characterized by an impressive commitment, an unbridled enthusiasm,  and
an  uncompromising  standard of excellence in all endeavors on behalf of
the organization and the community it serves; and
 
  WHEREAS, Today, the American Legion Auxiliary Department of New York
continues its dedication to  fostering  the  traditions  of  patriotism,
excellence,  and commitment which have made our nation strong; it is the
custom of this Legislative Body to recognize the significance  of  their
contributions  and  to note their worthy endeavors which have earned the
recognition and applause of all the citizens of this great Empire State;
now, therefore, be it
 
  RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its  deliberations  to
commemorate  the  100th  Anniversary  of  the  American Legion Auxiliary
Department of New York; and be it further
 
  RESOLVED, That a copy of this  Resolution,  suitably  engrossed,  be
transmitted to the American Legion Auxiliary Department of New York.
