Assembly Resolution No. 487

        MOURNING    the    death    of   Dorothy   Turano,
        distinguished citizen, passionate local leader,  and
        devoted member of her community
 
  WHEREAS,  It  is  the  custom  of this Legislative Body to recognize
those individuals whose  lifelong  commitment  to  service  has  left  a
lasting  impact on our communities and whose legacy continues to inspire
future generations; and
 
  WHEREAS, Dorothy Turano of Brooklyn, New York, died on Thursday, May
18, 2023; and
 
  WHEREAS, Dorothy  Turano  was  a  lifelong  resident  of  Brooklyn's
Community  Board  18,  born  and  raised in Marine Park, New York, and a
proud product of New York City's public school system; and
 
  WHEREAS, In 1960, Dorothy Turano moved to Canarsie, New York,  where
she  raised  her  family  and  became  deeply  engaged  in improving her
neighborhood through tireless community service and  civic  involvement;
and
 
  WHEREAS,  Dorothy Turano dedicated herself to improving local public
schools and strengthening the Canarsie community, becoming a trusted and
respected voice for countless residents over the decades; and
 
  WHEREAS, Dorothy Turano served the people of Brooklyn with honor and
distinction for more than 40 years, including her tenure as the district
manager of Community Board 18, from which she formally retired in  2020,
but continued to volunteer and serve her community for years thereafter;
and
 
  WHEREAS,  In  addition  to her work as district manager of Community
Board 18, Dorothy Turano served in various other professions  throughout
her  lifetime,  including  as  a NYC youth coordinator for the NYC Youth
Board, paraprofessional at Bildersee Junior High  School,  paralegal  at
Allstate  Insurance  Company,  and elected community school board member
for District No. 18; and
 
  WHEREAS, Those who worked alongside Dorothy  Turano  recognized  her
brilliance, commitment, and natural leadership skills, leading her to be
elected  to  serve as president for several organizations, including the
Parent Teachers Association for P.S. 114,  Parent  Teachers  Association
for  Bildersee Junior High School, Parent Teachers Association for South
Shore High School,  and  parent  president  of  Mount  Sinai  School  of
Medicine and SUNY Health Science of Brooklyn; and
 
  WHEREAS,  The  Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education, Farragut
Redwood Civic Association, and Joint Council  for  Community  Betterment
were  also greatly improved by Dorothy Turano's service as board member;
and
 
  WHEREAS, Dorothy Turano's life exemplified the very best  of  public
service, marked by compassion, leadership, and an unwavering devotion to
the neighborhoods she loved; and
 
  WHEREAS,  Armed  with a humanistic spirit and imbued with a sense of
compassion, Dorothy Turano leaves behind a legacy which will long endure
the passage of time and will remain as a comforting memory  to  all  she
served and befriended; now, therefore, be it
 
  RESOLVED,  That  this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
mourn the death of Dorothy  Turano,  distinguished  citizen,  passionate
local leader, and devoted member of her community; and be it further
 
  RESOLVED,  That  a  copy  of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the family of Dorothy Turano.
