Norris Stands Up Against Bullying

A Letter to the Editor from Assemblyman Mike Norris (R,I-Lockport)

I would like to thank the Lockport Union-Sun & Journal for bringing attention to anti-bullying legislation known as Jacobe’s Law. I am a sponsor of this bill and agree with my hometown paper – the bill should be brought up for a vote in Albany as soon as possible.

Jacobe’s Law would require schools to notify parents when a child is being bullied at school. My predecessor, Assemblywoman Jane Corwin, fought very hard to stop bullying and helped to enact laws protecting children against cyberbullying. I am proud to pick up this mantel and continue the fight to safeguard New York’s children.

Since first being elected to the state Assembly, I have been working to stop domestic violence. Bullying is another form of violence that children are too familiar with, and that’s why I joined state Sen. James Tedisco and my colleague from across the aisle, Assemblywoman Patricia Fahy, in sponsoring this bill and calling on leadership in Albany to bring it up for a vote before the end of this year’s session.

Furthermore, I encourage parents and students alike to not stay silent about bullying. For help and resources, please go to www.stopbullying.gov.
