Assemblyman Al Stirpe Sends Thanks to All Mothers This Mother’s Day
Where would we be without our mothers? For most of us, it was the guiding influence of our mothers that made us who we are today. Whether it was teaching us something as simple as how to tie our shoelaces or teaching us major life lessons, mothers are always there to impart their wisdom, love us unconditionally and be a guiding force throughout life.
I lost my mother to cancer 15 years ago, but there isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t think about her. I remember when she received the devastating news – the doctors gave her one year to live, but she persevered and managed to make it closer to five. My mother was a fighter – she chose to do everything she could to stay as healthy as possible and decided never to give up.
My mother’s battle with cancer ultimately taught me a great deal about life and about the importance of family. She showed me that no matter how bad things might be, there was always something to be grateful for. And one of those blessings was getting to spend some time with her granddaughter. My mother knew she didn’t have much time, so she made the most of each and every day. She even wrote letters to my daughter to read when she became older, so she could always be part of her life. I hope I’ve been able to show my family and friends how important they are to me. That’s something my mother showed to all of us.
While most celebrate Mother’s Day with perhaps a brunch, a barbecue or even with just a simple phone call, please remember to take the time to thank your mother for her remarkable efforts. And as we think of the mothers who are no longer with us, this day is a time to reflect and remember the memories of the time spent with the woman who made us who we are today.
As we celebrate our own moms, remember there are other mothers all around us who have had a meaningful impact on our lives and deserve recognition on this special day – women like our grandmothers, sisters, aunts, daughters and friends.
So, on this Mother’s Day, let’s acknowledge the tremendous accomplishments of mothers everywhere. These women deserve our recognition and appreciation. They often balance work, family and a household while making it all look easy in their kids’ eyes. Whether it’s flowers and candy or just a simple hug, remember to do something nice for the mother in your life.
