Assemblyman Stirpe: Get back to Enjoying All That CNY Has to Offer This Summer

As we head into summer, there’s a lot more to celebrate than just the warm weather. We’ve finally turned the corner on this devastating pandemic and our lives are beginning to return to normal. After a year that kept us apart and challenged our communities in every way possible, it’s time to safely get back to doing the activities that we love. From attending concerts and fairs to taking in the sights, Central New York has everything you need for a fun-filled summer.

Seventy percent of New Yorkers ages 18 and older have received at least one vaccination shot – a huge triumph and testament to what we can accomplish when we work together. Thanks to the compassion and diligence that New Yorkers have shown these past 15 months, most of the COVID-19 restrictions have now been lifted. This means that enhanced cleaning, social distancing, health screenings and contact tracing mandates are no longer required for most businesses and other commercial and social settings.[1] However, it’s important to keep in mind that children under 12 years old can’t be vaccinated yet. Kids and other unvaccinated people should continue to take the necessary precautions, such as social distancing and wearing a mask, to keep infection rates low and protect the public health. And, of course, everyone should continue wash their hands frequently and stay home if they are sick.

After its cancellation last year, the much-anticipated New York State Fair is back and better than ever this summer! The fair will be open at 100% capacity from Aug. 20 to Sept. 6 and offers a variety of unique attractions and local vendors for everyone in the family to enjoy. Whether you’re native to the area or a visitor from across the country, people from all over are encouraged to make the trip to Central New York for this wonderful event. The return of the fair will not only be a great source of entertainment, but will also help attract tourists, provide support to small businesses and give our local economy a strong boost. I hope to see many of you at the fair this year to celebrate the end of summer and get a taste of the best New York has to offer.

Along with the fair, there are so many things to do and places to go right here in our community. From farm festivals and museums, to a wide array of dining options and art, to music and sporting events, our local attractions and businesses are eager to welcome you back. To help revive the tourism industry, the state is launching a $40 million I Love New York campaign, which aims to promote activities and events across the state, including here in Central New York.[2] For more information on local and statewide spots to visit, you can go to iloveny.com.

In addition, the free summer concert series is returning to North Syracuse’s Lonergan Park. Families can enjoy a variety of different music and are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs. Many local day camps are also up and running again and public pools and parks are reopening. Registration and/or day passes may be required for entry and residents should contact their local facility before visiting. Summer activities such as boating, hiking and nature programs are available at many of our parks and are the perfect way to spend a warm day with the family. There’s plenty to look forward to this summer and countless opportunities to celebrate the end of this difficult chapter and the beginning of a brighter tomorrow. I hope Central New York families have a happy and safe summer filled with unforgettable memories.
