Beephan Calls for Return to Judicial Discretion
Assemblyman Anil Beephan, Jr. (R,C-East Fishkill) today joined fellow Assembly and Senate Minority at a joint press conference to question the effectiveness ofbail reform and the return of judicial discretion as crime rates increase throughout the state. The event was attended by Tammy Patrick, who gave the account of her father’s death at the hands of a man who was released thanks to the loose bail reform laws enacted in 2019. Beephan wants to see a return to sensible legislation for public protection.
“We’ve heard hundreds of horror stories caused as a direct result of bail reform policies and the loss of judicial discretion, and we know changes have to be made,” Beephan said. “New Yorkers have repeatedly told us they don’t feel as safe, and they are begging for common sense changes. This will be a long fight, but I’m committed to advocating to see bail reform fixed and a prompt return to a sense of safety in our neighborhoods.”
