Maher Addresses New York’s Current Tax Climate
Assemblyman Brian Maher (R,C-Walden) participated in a press conference today, National Tax Day, alongside members of the Assembly and Senate Minority Conferences. They emphasized the significance of this day in New York State. Additionally, it was highlighted in the 2024 Rich States, Poor States: ALEC-Laffer State Economic Competitiveness Index, which assesses the economic status and outlook of all 50 states, New York state is ranked 29th in economic performance and 50th in economic outlook this year, on a scale of one to 50 (with one being the best and 50 being the worst).
Maher urged all lawmakers at the state and local levels to collaborate on improving the state’s economic status and to work with economic representatives. New Yorkers have been burdened by the state's taxes, leading to record numbers of residents relocating to neighboring states due to the inability to cope with New York’s escalating taxes and economic instability.
“New York state has an opportunity to change our tax climate and make it a more affordable place to live. It is the highest-taxed state in the union. Our state consistently ranks dead last in economic outlook, but there are steps we can take on the state and local level right now to fix that,” said Maher “Easing the tax burden on residents, ensuring greater transparency when it comes to spending, and providing for a more friendly business climate are attainable goals I’d like to see New York reach.”
