McDonough: No Reason To Extend Eviction Moratorium

Assemblyman Dave McDonough (R,C,I-Merrick) joined his fellow Assembly Minority and small business landlords for a virtual press conference in objection to the Assembly Majority bill extending the state’s eviction moratorium. The small business landlords shared their experiences from the past year trying to meet their financial obligations while managing the state’s restrictive regulations. The moratorium was scheduled to expire on May 1; however, newly-introduced legislation A.7175 will extend the provisions until at least August 31, 2021.
“This moratorium would place our landlords in a financial bind, leaving them with virtually no way to recoup overdue rental payments, remove disruptive tenants from their properties or even access their own property,” said McDonough. “These protections were once justified during the early stages of the pandemic, but now would be severely abused at the expense of landlords. If New York is truly on the path of reopening there is no reason to continue this moratorium, especially at the rate at which it is being abused.”
