Weprin Kicks-Off 2015 Summer Reading Challenge

Richmond Hill, NY – In partnership with New York State libraries, Assemblyman David I. Weprin (D – Richmond Hill) today announced the kickoff of the Assembly’s annual Summer Reading Challenge. The primary goal of the program is to encourage students to continue reading during the summer months; thereby maximizing their level of academic focus and interest over summer vacation. Upon successful completion of the Summer Challenge, each student will receive a New York State Assembly Certificate in Excellence in Reading.

“The Summer Reading Challenge is a fun, unique way to help foster a love of reading and help our children succeed in school,” said Assemblyman Weprin. “Numerous studies have shown that reading over the summer months will likely keep students focused and engaged. This will allow the students to expand the progress made during the school year and carry it over to the following semesters.”

To participate in the program, children must read by themselves or with a partner for a minimum of 15 minutes every day for at least 40 days throughout the months of July and August. The days can be marked off on a provided calendar and submitted to the Offices of Assemblyman Weprin. Upon successful completion of the Challenge, those participants will be awarded an Excellence in Reading certificate from the New York State Assembly. This year’s Summer Reading Challenge theme is, “Every hero has a story.”

“The Challenge, by encouraging kids to pick up a book, will provide all children with the fantastic opportunity to boost their reading skills over summer vacation. As a result, this will strengthen their learning skills for the coming school year. For families that may not have adequate access to books and other educational resources, this partnership with New York State libraries will ensure every child has the chance to participate,” added Weprin.
