Assemblymember Barrett Votes for Measures to Improve Government Accountability
“New Yorkers should expect their public servants to represent them and not the needs of special interest groups. This week I sponsored and voted for two bipartisan ethics reform measures to deny pensions for corrupt politicians and prevent conflicts of interest.
“The first strips officials convicted of corruption of their taxpayer-funded pension. This measure will appear on the ballot in November for voter approval to change the New York State Constitution, following its passage in both the Assembly and Senate last year and again this year.
“The second requires legislators earning more than $5,000 per year in outside income to submit information to the independent Legislative Ethics Commission and seek a ruling as to whether there’s a conflict of interest. These are important steps taken to restore trust and integrity in Albany.”
