Flood and Suffolk County Officials Propose State of Emergency for North Shore of Brookhaven
Assemblyman Ed Flood (R,C-Port Jefferson) has requested that Governor Hochul declare a state of emergency on the north shore of Brookhaven following the disaster that flooded Long Island this past week. Declaring a state of emergency would streamline and fast-track repair and recovery efforts, much of which are critically important in the early stages. Assemblyman Doug Smith (R,C-Holbrook), Assemblyman Jarett Gandolfo (R,C-Sayville), Assemblyman Joe DeStefano (R,C-Medford) and Assemblywoman Jodi Giglio (R,C-Riverhead) signed onto the letter to Hochul requesting assistance.
A significan rainfall of 10 inches severely impacted the north shore, leading to the destruction of essential roadways, blocking many Long Islanders’ access to their workplaces and residences or blocking them from leaving their residences. Upon recent assessments, the repair process could extend over several years, although many repair teams are actively engaged in restoration efforts. Local officials warned that additional damage may be uncovered as the infrastructure undergoes further evaluation.
“I want to express my utmost appreciation for local volunteers, first responders, utility companies and officials who have shown resilience in the aftermath of the storm damages. Their work is recognized by many as they have worked endlessly throughout the community offering helping hands,” said Flood. “We must continue working together to ensure affected areas receive the support they need to rebuild and protect against future storms. Governor Hochul’s support would be extremely helpful and appreciated as we have a long road ahead.”
