Assemblymember Bronson Slams Janus v. AFSCME Decision
Labor unions have been integral in building a stronger workforce and strengthening our economy. They give workers a powerful voice. They work in partnership with employers so both have the ability to serve the public. They help increase workplace safety, push for higher, fairer wages that can actually support a family and ensure workers get the benefits theyre due. Theyre a key part of whats great about America if something isnt right then we can band together and demand change. But today, the U.S. Supreme Court dealt a major blow to public sector unions in Janus v. AFSCME.
This continued attack on organized labor is dangerous and needs to end, or were going to go back to the time when workers didnt have any say. In anticipation of a negative finding in Janus, the Assembly took steps that will ensure that our employees keep their voice through a series of measures adopted in this year budget: Deduction of dues must begin upon authorization by employee; new employees must be given access to their employee representative.
To my hardworking brothers and sisters in organized labor, I stand with you. You have helped make America better and stronger. You have helped fight inequality and have helped increase opportunity. I will continue to do everything I can to protect you.
