Assemblyman Jake Ashby (R,C,I,Ref-Castleton) and Sen. Daphne Jordan were on hand for the dedication of the Roger J. Mazal Memorial Bridge on September 14. The bridge spans the Kline Kill on Route 203 between the Towns of Chatham and Kinderhook. Legislation sponsored by Ashby was passed in order to rename the bridge in Mazals honor.
Specialist 4 (SP4) Roger J. Mazal made the ultimate sacrifice for our great country, and the dedication of this bridge in his hometown will forever memorialize his heroism, said Ashby. The memorial bridge will serve as a constant reminder of the devotion and valor of Roger J. Mazal and his fellow Columbia County veterans who sacrificed so much in service to our country.
Mazal, a native of Valatie, was killed in action March 7, 1969 in the Pleiku province in Vietnam while serving as a member of Company D, 2nd Battalion, 35th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division of the United States Army. Mazal is buried at Woodlawn Cemetery in Niverville, just miles from the bridge now named in his honor.
